The Power Station Switch Houses
Battersea Power Station

Structure in General

existing [under renovation]

residential commercial office

  • The power station appeared on the cover of Pink Floyd's album Animals; a giant inflatable pink pig was tethered to one of the station's chimneys.
  • The power station is art-deco in design and is cathedral-like in its proportions.
  • The building is constructed using a steel frame clad in brick.
  • Towering over Battersea, the four chimneys are a local London landmark.
  • Plans are afoot to totally redevelop the power station to provide entertainment and leisure facilities; it is hoped this will have the same effect on the locale as did Tate Modern, also by Giles Gilbert Scott.
  • The control room is clad in Italian marble, the turbine hall has terrazzo flooring and there are wrought iron staircases.
  • Renovation of the building is due to begin in 2013.
  • Power generation at the station ceased in 1983 and the building began to fall into disrepair and dereliction.
  • Battersea Power Station is the largest brick building in Europe.
  • The building is Grade II* Listed.
