Facts

  • Begun in 1195, the minaret was intended to be 86 meters high, the tallest in the Muslim world at the time.
  • It is decorated with geometric designs, and each of the facades has a different composition, interweaving designs, arches and windows.
  • Intended to be part of a large mosque, two hundred columns mark out the area where the mosque was to stand.
  • Construction halted upon the death of the sultan, Yacoub al-Mansour, in 1199, and materials were used in other official buildings.
