Sct. Catharinæ Kirke

Structure in General

existing [completed]

  • In 1543 King Christian III gave the church to Ribe as a parish church.
  • The church used to be part of a monastery.
  • According to the monastery records, one of the monks 'Broder Bjørn' was the first master builder of the church and monastery.
  • In the centuries following the Reformation, decay began to take its toll until 1918 when a restoration programme took place, lasting until 1932.
  • The tower of 1617 was originally much taller but developed an incline which was impossible to correct; to avoid collapse, the tower was shortened and reinforced.
  • With the advent of the Reformation, the monastery was closed down and turned into a hospital.
  • Reconstruction in the 14th century saw a tripling of church space.
