Facts

  • The gateway was named in honour of royal brothers Prince George and H.R.H. Edward Prince of Wales, who were both there to open the gate in 1927.
  • The nine pillars on either side of the main arch represent the then nine provinces of Canada at the time of completion (Newfoundland did not join confederation until 1949).
