Facts

  • In 1821, a decorative grotto designed by Osip Beauvais was built at the base of the tower.
  • In the 1680s, an open four-faceted stone marquee with a watch-turret was added to the tower.
  • The tower was given its present-day name in the early 18th century because of the construction of The Arsenal nearby.
  • Originally, the tower was built in 1493-1495.
  • The tower is located at the western side of The Kremlin Wall.
  • In the 15-16th centuries, the Neglinnaya River was dammed up near the tower.
  • Initially, the tower was named Grannyonnaya (Faceted) because of its facade form.
