Facts

  • Straddling the river Danube, the New Bridge is the world's seventh largest cable-stayed bridge.
  • New Bridge officially opened on 26th September 1972.
  • The bridge's total mass is 7,537 tonnes.
  • The bridge's cable-stays are linked to a single A-shaped column which is inclined towards Petržalka.
  • The column is topped by a public restaurant at a height of 85 metres (279 feet) which in turn is topped by an observation deck.
  • Restaurant access is achieved by an elevator in one beam of the pylon whilst the other beam houses 430 fire stairs.
  • The top of the observation deck is at 95 metres (312 feet) with a view of 100 kilometres (62 miles) on a clear day.
  • The egg-shaped restaurant dome is 32 metres (105 feet) at its widest point.
  • The bridge has 2 decks: the upper is for vehicular transport - with two lanes, each 8.5 metres (28 feet) wide - whilst the lower has two 3.5 metre (11.5 feet) footbridges.
  • The bridge is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
