The architect didn't want to create a clock, but a "musical figures clock", to show how fast time goes by, with each figure representing an important person of Vienna within the century.
The clock is a horizontal "clocktower" connecting the two houses of the Anker-Hof.
Each hour one of twelve 2.8 m high copper figures representing the hour appears n the window. These figures represent the Emperor Marc Aurel, Walther von der Vogelweide, Prinz Eugen, Maria Theresia, Kaiser Franz I. von Lothringen, or Joseph Haydn.
