Facts

  • Funding for the column came from the Duke's army; every soldier was docked a day's pay.
  • The column was originally to be modelled on Rome's Colonna Traiana, but funds for such work were not available.
  • The statue of the Duke is by Richard Westmacott whilst the column is made from pink granite.
  • The Duke in question is the 'Grand Old Duke of York, who had 10,000 men' of British nursery rhyme fame.
  • 169 steps lead to the viewing platform which is closed to public access.
