Facts

  • This stadium replaces the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome as the home football stadium of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
  • The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, owners of the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in suburban Prior Lake, donated $10 million to the project in October 2007. This largest donation ever to University Athletics will give the tribe naming and landscaping rights for the main plaza entrance to the stadium.
  • A funding package for the $248 million project was approved by the Minnesota House and Senate on May 20, 2006.
  • Site work began in September 2006 with building demolition, street realignment, and utility work; foundation work followed in August 2007.
  • The Golden Gophers beat Air Force 20-13 on September 12, 2009 in the stadium's inaugural game.
  • On the same day, another current user of the Metrodome, the Minnesota Twins, were given final House and Senate approval for a financing package to construct the Target Field.
  • The last of approximately 2200 foundation piles were driven on 7 December 2007.
  • It marks the return of Gopher football to campus. The previous stadium, Memorial Stadium, was demolished in 1992.
