Facts

  • The decorative crown above the elevator tower on the eastside of the building is slightly shorter than the mechanical penthouse/machine room atop the main tower. It rises to a height of 181'-8", and the roof to a height of 168'-3".
  • A 6'-0" parapet rises above the main roof bringing the height of the main roof parapet to 151'-2".
  • The first phase of the West Wing expansion included the construction of a steel-framed 4 floor (1 below grade), 74'-11" tall podium. It costed $67,000,000 to construct, and was completed in the fall of2005.
  • Construction started on October 20, 2005 on the six-story addition to the top of the current four-story expansion.
  • The bottom three floors of the structure were framed in steel, but per Sparrow Hospital's request, the next five floors were framed in concrete. However, because of the weight of the concrete-framed structure atop the steel-framed podium, the top floor had to be constructed from steel.
