Facts

  • Moving this sizeable building is considered one of the greatest engineering feats in Albany's history.
  • The procedure took five days, during which time the residents continued to live in the building with utilities re-attached each evening.
  • The building's main entrance, which once faced Swan Street, is now accessed by a walkway leading off of State Street.
  • The Fort Frederick was originally located 350 feet to the north on Swan Street, on the site of the Alfred E. Smith State Office Building.
  • After it was condemned in 1926 to make way for the new building, it was lifted off its foundation and moved on railroad tracks to its present location.
