Facts

  • Metropolitan Stadium became the home of the Minnesota Twins after the Washington Senators left the District of Columbia for the Twin Cities.
  • The Minneapolis Millers inaugurated the new stadium in a game against the Wichita Braves on April 24, 1956.
  • The stadium was demolished in 1985 and the site is now home to the Mall of America, the second-largest shopping center in the world.
  • It was the first modern stadium to be abandoned. The Twins and the NFL's Minnesota Vikings moved to the new multi-use Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis in 1982.
  • It was originally built for the Minneapolis Millers, the AAA farm team for the New York Giants. The legendary Willie Mays played for the team.
