commercial office

  • Across the street from the Marriott Monterey.
  • First office building in Monterey to have an elevator.
  • The motifs continue to the second and fifth floors, while the third and fourth floors display simpler projections.
  • The flat roof is embellished with a sequence of highly ornate cast gray stone parapet, alternating with large and small urns.
  • Above the main entrance is a cast stone arch with "Professional" and Corinthian columns, vaulted ceiling, decorative molding and brick walls.
  • "L" shaped building with concrete and terra cotta detailing, marked by ornamental moldings above the windows, which contrast an art nouveau effect with the building's skyscraper aesthetic.
  • In 1926 a Victorian style single-family dwelling, identified on Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps as 402 Main Street, was demolished to make room for the Professional Building.
  • The lobby area is notable for its gothic style with stone walls, arched ceiling, light fixtures, tile floor and curved stone and iron stairwell.
  • All of the storefronts have bronze framed plate glass windows, marble bulkhead, opaque glass transoms and iron grillwork.
  • Based on a survey evaluation by the Architectural Resources Group of San Francisco on June 21, 2004, "...the Professional Building appears to retain a high level of historical and architectural integrity, and appears to be in excellent condition".
  • Highly ornate with Chateausque and Gothic detailing.
  • Situated adjacent to the City of Monterey's first firehouse at 414 Calle Principal.
