  • The six major buildings are named for St. Francis, the hospital's founder, Mother Alfred, and her four administrators, Sisters Joseph, Domitilla, Mary Brigh, and Generose.
  • St. Mary's Hospital is one of four Level I trauma centers in Minnesota; the others are Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, and North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.
  • St. Mary's Hospital was founded in 1887 with 27 beds. Today, the hospital has over 1,000 inpatient beds.
  • It occupies a prominent site west of downtown Rochester. The complex has been expanded many times over the years.
  • The main section has 9 floors and was completed in 1940. Fire Insurance maps indicate this building is 123 feet to the main roof, not including the prominent tower section.
  • Major additions in 1980 and 1997 by HDR Architecture added modern 10-floor wings.
