Facts

  • Officially opened on September 4, 1917.
  • Additions to the building were completed in 1922, 1926, 1949 and 1962.
  • Featured a contrasting brick and stone facade, stepped parapet, and pointed arch entrance in the Jacobethan Revival style.
  • On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, the Birmingham Design Review Committee approved the request for a demolition permit from the News. Its manual demolition would commence in July 2007 and be complete by November 2007.
  • The 3,000-pound terracotta nameplate above the entrance was removed intact in September 2007 to be utilized in a future public display.
  • With the completion of the new Birmingham News Headquarters in August 2006, this was demolished in 2007 to make way for a surface parking lot.
