Facts

  • Constructed by the Komsomol of Armenia (Communist Union of Youth).
  • Due to lack of funds the tower was built from citizens' donations and took 13 years to complete.
  • The hotel was occupied in 1988 by Gyuran earthquake refugees, and was sold in 2003 for $740,000 to private hands.
  • Scheduled for demolition in 2003, a public outcry led to plans to renovate the hotel and preserve the tower at a cost of $5 million.
  • The tower includes a 1200 seat concert hall, a gymnasium and a 14-floor, 500 room hotel.
  • The maize-shaped building is nicknamed by locals the 'corn-cob building'.
