Facts

  • Burnham & Root designed the original 10-story building, with a prominent clock tower over the Market Street entrance.
  • The building was damaged by the 1906 Earthquake and rebuilt with an additional 16-story section along Kearny Street by Willis Polk.
  • The original brick and terra cotta exterior was covered by aluminum siding in the 1960s. In 2005 the siding was removed and the building converted into the Ritz Carlton Residence Club.
  • A vertical addition took place from 2005 to 2007, taking the building to 24 floors. The original structure was meticulously restored to its original appearance.
  • The first iron and steel-frame skyscraper in the city is also considered the first on the West Coast.
  • Constructed for the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, which occupied the building for 34 years.
