  • It was one of several black-owned businesses that gave West Parrish Street the monicker "Black Wall Street.".
  • The North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, founded in 1898, is the oldest and largest African-American owned and managed insurance company in the United States.
  • The company moved to the western edge of downtown with the opening of the Legacy Tower in 1965.
  • Early 20th-Century social activists Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois publically praised the social and economic development of Durham's African-American community as being among the most advanced in the nation.
