Facts

  • Around 4,000 years ago, ancient Britons practised Druidism on the site of St. Mark's.
  • The foundation stone of the church was laid on St. Mark's Day, 25th April 1851.
  • World War II saw St. Mark's being firebombed on 21st September 1940 and then again five nights later.
  • The church was restored and re-consecrated on 5th October 1957.
  • The reredos are by Ninian Comper.
  • St. Mark's was attacked by an arsonist on 12th November 1994 causing damage by smoke and further damage by water used to douse the fire.
