  • The temple was built in Doric style.
  • This is the third temple with the name "Parthenon" built on exactly the same spot where the two earlier temples were built.
  • Construction began in 447 BC and was completed, including the sculpting of the facades, in 438 BC.
  • The temple was built in honor of virgin goddess "Parthnenos" Athena, thus the name "Parthenon".
  • A large wood statue with many gold finishes, made by the sculptor Phidias, representing goddess Athena was placed inside the temple.
  • The dimensions of the base of the monument are 72.5 x 34 meters and the height is 10.43 meters.
