This is the tallest lighthouse in the United States.
Approximately 1,250,000 bricks were used in the tower’s construction.
Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
The tower tapers in diameter from 32 feet, 5 1/2 inches at the base to 17 feet, 2 inches just below the tower lantern.
In 1999, the lighthouse was physically moved inland half a mile from its original location to protect it from being engulfed by an encroaching Atlantic Ocean.
The tower's alternating black and white spiral color scheme has made Hatteras the world's most recognizable lighthouse.
