Facts

  • This is the tallest lighthouse in the United States.
  • Approximately 1,250,000 bricks were used in the tower’s construction.
  • Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
  • The tower tapers in diameter from 32 feet, 5 1/2 inches at the base to 17 feet, 2 inches just below the tower lantern.
  • In 1999, the lighthouse was physically moved inland half a mile from its original location to protect it from being engulfed by an encroaching Atlantic Ocean.
  • The tower's alternating black and white spiral color scheme has made Hatteras the world's most recognizable lighthouse.
