Facts

  • The Andrews Building was Spartanburg's first tall commercial building.
  • Was being demolished to make way for the Opportunity Block Hotel and civic center.
  • Scheduled for implosion on October 8, 1977, the building collapsed one day prior at 11:31 a.m. resulting in the deaths of five workers being crushed by falling derbis.
  • The tragic collapse was a result of cuts in the 36 steel beams that held the structure up being too deep.
