Facts

  • The stuccoed church is Regency, built in the Classical style and is the last proprietary church in London.
  • A pediment above the Doric porch has the church's only clock at its centre.
  • The first service held in the church was on October 26, 1823.
  • The clock is as old as the church and was made by John Moore & Son of Clerkenwell.
  • Dating from 1882, the east window depicts the Eagle of St. John.
  • September 2004 saw the completion of major renovations which included underpinning the church as well as excavating the undercroft to provide increased space.
  • Prior to renovation, St. John's was painted all white with dark blue to wooden doors and window frames. The church is now painted in cream with a white tower and red-brown woodwork.
  • St. John's Downshire Hill is Grade I Listed.
