Facts

  • The church is built on the former site of the three-story Greek Revival mansion of Dr. Charles Howard (1802-1869).
  • Francis Scott Key (1779-1843), writer of the "The Star Spangled Banner," died during a visit to the Howard home.
  • At the time of its construction, the city would not allow the height of the church's taller western steeple to exceed the height of the Washington Monument.
  • The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
