Facts

  • The first Eldridge Hotel was built on the same site in 1855. It was burned in the historically infamous "Quantrill's Raid" on Lawrence on August 28, 1863, at the height of the Civil War.
  • Citing more competition from newer facilities at the edge of the city, the owners closed in the summer of 2002 and filed for bankruptcy.
  • The second hotel was replaced by the present structure after it was basically worn out in the mid-1920s. This modern structure was promoted as being fireproof and having an elevator.
  • An investor group headed by former KU and NFL (Bears) QB Bobby Douglass won a decision from a bankruptcy judge and took control of the property in September 2004. The group promises a new heyday for the Eldridge.
  • The Hotel Eldridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the National Trust's Historic Hotels of America program.
