Facts

  • The basilica's grand dome, upon its completion, was the second largest in the United States behind only the United States Capitol in Washington, DC.
  • Upon the dome can be found four 18 ft tall, copper-winged angels pointing in the four directions of the compass.
  • The twin, open-design marble spires flanking the main entrance were both originally 165 ft (50 m) in height.
  • The considerably shorter, rebuilt spires feature an enclosed design and are topped with copper domes reminiscent of the basilica's grand dome.
  • A 1941 lightning storm damaged both of the original spires.
