Facts

  • The Masonic Temple was abandoned by the Scottish Rite Freemasons at the beginning of the Depression in 1929 and never completed.
  • It was purchased in 1945 by the State of Rhode Island along with two neighboring buildings.
  • The current renovation and conversion project will include an eight-story building linking the Masonic Temple with the adjacent VMA Arts and Cultural Center of 1928.
  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it will be renovated as a “certified historic rehabilitation” in accordance with preservation guidelines established by the US Department of the Interior.
