Facts

  • William Jennings Bryan, three times a candidate for the USA Presidency, visited the church in 1912 and gave it the nickname, "Cathedral of the Plains".
  • An estimated 125,000 cubic feet of native limestone was hauled from seven miles south of the church for construction. No automatic lifts or power tools were used in the construction.
  • The church faces west, is 220' long and 110' wide. The nave is 75' high, the ceiling 44' tall and the twin towers 141 feet each.
  • At the time of its 1911 dedication, the 1,100 seat capacity was believed to be the largest church west of the Mississippi River in the USA.
  • The Kansas State Historical Society was first to grant the church historic status and on 5/14/1971, it was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
