The building serves as the Alberta Government Centre for southern Alberta.
Originally the Calgary Normal School, training center for thousands of Commonwealth teachers, the building was renamed McDougall School in 1922 in honour of Reverend George McDougall.
It was declared a historic site in 1982.
On September 3, 2004, a memorial to Alberta's air servicemen and women was dedicated on the grounds. The memorial includes a statue of an air serviceman and 1,600 names of those who fell during World War II.
