Facts

  • It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
  • The building forms the northern terminus for the War Memorial Plaza complex. The five blocks to the south are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • The landmark Paul Philippe Cret building was renovated and expanded in 2003-2007 with a 6-story arcing glass addition to the north.
  • Construction was halted for a full year in Spring 2004 after major structural flaws were found in the parking garage. Construction resumed 7 June 2005.
  • The final beam for the new tower was raised on 30 September 2005.
  • The Library Delivery Team was replaced as general contractor by a Hunt/Smoot Joint Venture in December 2005.
  • The library was moved to the Old Indianapolis City Hall during construction, where most services were offered.
  • The grand re-opening took place on Sunday, 9 December 2007 at 2 pm.
