Facts

  • Engakuji is the second most important of Kamakura`s five great Zen temples.
  • Engakuji is the main temple of the Zen Rikai Engakuji school.
  • The temple was dedicated in part to the souls of the fallen Mongolian and Japanese soldiers, when the Mongolians invaded Japan in 1281.
  • The Shariden, enshrining one of the Buddha`s teeth, is on the temple grounds and has been designated a national treasure.
  • The Ogane, or large bell, on the grounds, was also designated a national treasure.
