Facts

  • Fewer than 1,000 people lived in Vancouver when the first Hudson's Bay store opened on Cordova Street in Gastown on January 17, 1887.
  • In 1913, the first phase was started on the present store at Georgia and Seymour, right behind the old store on Granville, and opened on March 14, 1914.
  • On September 21, 1893, a new red brick, three-storey building was opened on the corner of Granville and Georgia, site of the present day store.
  • In 1899, the Granville Street store was extended 50 feet and another 25 feet in 1905.
  • In 1949, the present store was completed externally with a fourth addition on the north Seymour Street side.
  • A glass-enclosed pedestrian bridge crosses Seymour Street to a parkade from the store's third floor.
  • In 1925, a second phase started with the demolition of the old store on Granville and Georgia replacing it with the present one, continuing the cream terra cotta facade and Corinthian columns. It was joined to the part on Georgia and Seymour.
  • In 1926, the third phase was added to the north Granville Street side.
