Facts

  • On 22-23 December 1972 a fire nearly destroyed the church. It was rebuilt from 1974-1976.
  • The tower under the steeple houses a carillon with 20 bells, installed in 1895. The largest bell weighs five tons and is named after St. James.
  • The church's Roosevelt tracker-pneumatic organ won the first prize at the World Columbian Exposition in 1893.
