Facts

  • The tallest of three towers, near the rear side, is octagonal in shape.
  • The deep foundation forms the wall of a canal that runs along the back of the church.
  • The church has an excellent location in the city center just across from the Central Station.
  • The first Sint Nicolaaskerk was taken from the Catholics in the late 16th century and renamed Oude Kerk by the Protestants.
  • The building's Neo-Baroque/Neo-Renaissance style make it an architectural rarity, since most newer European Catholic churches were built in the Neo-Gothic style.
  • Catholic masses are still held in the church.
  • The main façade has two towers standing either side of a rose window, the centre of which is formed by a bas relief depicting Christ and the Four Evangelists.
