During the civil war in 1934 the building was very important because it was a symbol for the social Vienna and during the war many inhabitants died. As a rememberance there is a sign on the so-called "blue arch".
The Karl-Marx-Hof is the most important "Gemeindebau" (municipality building) to-date; conceptually a "City within a city" with a large scale park-area inside.
The "Superblock" is one kilometer long and streets pass through huge arches in the building.
Austrian architect Harry Glück used the Karl-Marx-Hof in a study about the skyscrapers of Wohnpark Alterlaa.
