  • The building was financed by patrons like the industrial magnat Karl Wittgenstein.
  • The dominant symbol in the building is the laurel leaf, it's used for example on 3.000 golden git leaves and 700 berries on the copula.
  • At the entrance of the building you can see the masks of three gorgons which symbolise architecture, sculpture and painting.
  • The building is one of the most important representations of the "Jugendstil" (art nouveau) architecture.
  • The building was originally proposed for the Ringstraße, but violent protests at the municipal council moved the proposal to Friedrichstraße at Karlsplatz.
