Facts

  • The tip of the spire is 91.4 metres (300 feet) above sea-level.
  • The church's clock dates from 1843 and was retained from the original church.
  • St. James's was built to replace an earlier church which was deemed too small to accommodate the expanding congregation.
  • The foundation stone was laid on 13th June 1900 by the The Right Hon. and Right Reverand Mandell, Lord Bishop of London.
  • Although completed in 1902, the spire was finished by new contractors eight years later in 1910.
  • The church is built of Ancaster limestone with Bath stone dressings and cost £21,000 to build, though was repaired following incendiary bomb damage sustained in 1941.
