Facts

  • The two central piers on the west facade are topped by a pair of stainless steel sculptures by Richard Hunt called "Bookends".
  • This building is the realization of a collective wish made in 1988 when 115 candles were blown out on the library's anniversary cake.
  • During construction of this library most of the book collection was kept open to the public in the Fountain Square Building one block to the south.
  • The design came from an international competition won by Joseph Powell, a virtually unknown architect at the time.
