Facts

  • Often referred to as the Seashell Synagogue due to its unusual shape.
  • The seashell design was inspired by the shells on the shores of Thessaloníki, hometown of the wealthy Rekanati family which donated the money for the synagogue.
  • The north bare concrete facade is decorated with bas-reliefs of traditional Jewish motifs and symbols; the work of the artist Yechezkel Kimchi.
  • The coloured-glass windows, that present motifs from Jewish holidays, were made by the local artist Josef Shealtiel.
  • The synagogue has room for 400 men and 200 women, in separated galleries.
