Facts

  • This dramatic addition to the south was constructed from 2002-2005, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron.
  • The new addition is multi-faceted, covered with an unusual aluminum facade, and is cantilevered over the Hennepin Avenue sidewalk.
  • The Walker reopened on April 17, 2005.
  • The new expansion includes the 385-seat McGuire Theater, which will serve as a hub for the Walker's world-renowned performing arts programming.
  • Rooftop terraces on the original and new buildings provide spectacular views of downtown Minneapolis, across Loring Park.
  • This is the first in approximately $500 million in arts and cultural institution expansions completed in Minneapolis from 2005 to 2007. Others included the new Guthrie Theater, the new Minneapolis Central Library, an expansion of Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and an expansion of the Children's Theater Company.
  • The original Walker Art Center Gallery Tower building, located just to the north, was designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes.
  • The addition extends onto grounds formerly occupied by the Allianz Building. A new Allianz Life, East Building was constructed in suburban Golden Valley in 2000-2001.
