Facts

  • The church is still one of the tallest and most visible structures in Nazareth today.
  • The upper buttresses were designed by Muzio to form the letter 'M' for Mary.
  • A conical black-tiled roof marks the spot where the angel Gabriel is supposed to have first appeared to Mary.
  • Lower level enshrines the remains of a Byzantine grotto, supposed to have once been Mary’s home, which had stood on the spot.
  • The church has two levels: The bottom level is said to date back to the 4th century, and above it the more recent church and dome by architect Giovanni Muzio.
