Facts

  • The main body of the church was built in 1676-83, but the spire was not added until 1714-17, at which time Wren was heavily involved with St. Paul's Cathedral. The design closely resembles that of the western towers of St. Paul's.
  • The church's name is believed to derive from the Garlick that was sold in the area.
  • With the exception of St. Paul's Cathedral, St. James Garlickhithe has, at 12 metres (40 feet) the tallest church ceiling in the City of London.
