Facts

  • Built in the Renaissance-baroque style at the initiative of Piotr Skarga, a preacher famous for his treatise entitled "The Seym's Sermons" - a program for political changes in the Kingdom of Poland.
  • Like most of Warsaw's churches, Kościół Matki Bożej Łaskawej was brought to ashes first by the Swedish in the years 1655-1660, then by the Nazis during World War II.
  • Used primarly as a Jesuit church until 1773, when the priesthood was expelled. Afterwards it underwent numerous architectural changes, until the Jesuits took it back in 1920 and commenced restoration works.
