Facts

  • Originally constructed for the United States Surgeon General, this building became the first home of the World Bank.
  • It was eventually purchased by the World Bank in 1957.
  • Like the buildings directly east and southeast, it was demolished in the early 1990s to facilitate the construction of the full-block World Bank Headquarters. The address of this building (1818 H Street NW) has been retained for the rebuilt complex.
