Facts

  • The interiors of the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of the 1984 addition were never finished.
  • The Cass Tech Development and Preservation Society, a non-profit citizens group seeking the redevelopment of the historic high school building, is partnering with Detroit Public Schools to launch a plan to save the building.
  • The 1984 addition was connected to the original structure without first meeting current code compliance.
  • A major, modern addition was constructed at the back of the school in 1984, which included a lunchroom, a music department and practice room, gym, and swimming pool.
  • Architect Niels Chester Sorenson of Malcomson & Higginbotham was the head architect on this project.
  • The school was vacated in 2004 for the New Cass Technical High School, constructed directly north of, and across, Henry Street from this building.
