Facts

  • Providence Health Center/Sisters of Charity, present owners of this property, began seeking bids in April 2004 to have the medical center complex demolished.
  • Bethany was established by the Methodist Church in 1892.
  • The hospital's several wings were built in the following years: 1905, 1911, 1922 (Nursing School ), 1957 (Patient West Wing), 1968 addition, 1976 (Patient South Wing) and 1986 medical offices and underground parking.
  • Officials hope to have the site cleared for sale and redevelopment by the end of calendar year 2004.
  • Soaring operating costs caused by insurance and medicare cutbacks and an inner-city surge in indigent patients, forced the Sisters of Charity to close Bethany permanently in 1998. The property is on the market, but with little interest in today's medical/economic environment.
  • Financial difficulties resulted in the 400-bed Bethany Medical Center being sold to competitor Providence Medical Center (Catholic-Sisters of Charity, Leavenworth, KS) in 1996.
