Facts

  • The Coates House has state and federal historic status.
  • After the foundation was laid in 1854 it was used for cavalry barns and military barracks during the Civil War, then it was completed after the war in 1868.
  • The builder was Philadelphia lawyer, businessman and entrepreneur Kersey Coates, who also built the Coates Theatre across the street to the west. Many famous actors and actresses stayed at the hotel while performing at the theatre.
  • The most famous documented person to register is President Grover Cleveland.
  • On January 28, 1978, fire destroyed the south one-third of the building, killing 20 occupants. Firefighters were hampered as the water from their hoses froze almost instantly in the 10°F temperatures and blustery wind.
  • The remaining two-thirds of the structure was restored as a pricey apartment complex, and the once-fancy but long abandoned spas in the underground floors were restored to their original splendor.
