Facts

  • Built by the Army Corps of Engineers for bachelors quarters and family housing.
  • In 1969 the building was transferred from the Army to the State of Alaska and deeded to the city of Whittier in 1973.
  • An oddity in the world, virtually the entire city lives in just one building.
  • There is a 60-yard long tunnel running between the building and the local school so that students need not venture out into the winter weather.
  • Referred to by many residents as the Big House or BTI (Begich Towers Incorporated).
  • When constructed this was Alaska's tallest building.
