Facts

  • Fire insurance maps indicate that the Service Building, a 7-floor addition along the Prospect Avenue facade built in 1948, raised the height of the main roof by 12 feet and the height of the entire structure by 7 feet.
  • Today, the Service Building has been coverted into the ramp to drive vehicles up and down the floors of the parking garage.
  • Fire insurance maps indicate heights of 106 feet to the main roof and 126 feet to the former elevator penthouse of the original Walker & Weeks structure.
  • Walker & Weeks drew up two designs for a skybridge over Huron Road connecting the Prospect Store to the original Halle Building, one in the art deco style, another influenced by the bridges of Venice. Both featured bronze clocks.
  • No decorative skybridge was ever constructed and the buildings are instead connected by an underground tunnel below Huron Road.
