Facts

  • The Kansas City, MO Public Library historical file on the Bellerive documents that the following notables from the literary, entertainment and public personality ranks have signed its register. Silent-film actresses Lillian and Dorothy Gish and Mary Pickford, contralto Marian Anderson, writer Edith Sitwell and alleged "gangster" Al Capone. Stars like Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Liberace, Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis performed at the hotel's swanky (now defunct) Casbah Nightclub.
  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980.
  • The fancy, ornate red-brick structure's 140 apartment units are estimated to need up to $12 million in renovations to meet present-day standards.
  • Kansas City Royals' Baseball Hall-of-Famer George Brett lived at the Bellerive in his days as an unmarried, young baseball player in the 1970s.
